Swim Lessons

swim lessonsYear-round Lessons
The Bartlett Park District offers swimming lessons throughout the year. Please preview the appropriate brochure for class dates and times. During the summer season lessons are held at both Bartlett Aquatic Center (outdoor) and Splash Central (indoor). Fall, Winter & Spring lessons are held only at Splash Central (indoor facility). Lessons available include group or private. Group lessons are 40 minutes in length while private lessons are 30 minutes.

Before registering for a swim lesson, review your child’s previous lesson history and age limitations of the class. Classes fill quickly. If you have questions, please ask at the Registration Desk. Please list as many time/session choices as possible. Please note the time and dates of your lesson. No refunds or make-ups will be given for classes missed or forgotten.

First Day Procedures
Our lesson registration is set up to provide your child with the correct level class immediately. On the first day of class your child will be tested and placed in the level that correlates with their skills. If you have your child’s previous swim lesson report card please bring it in on the first day of class.

 

LESSON DESCRIPTIONS
Parent and Tot

Swim instructors will facilitate the lesson while parents act as the main instructor for the class. This class helps to develop comfort in the water, swimming readiness, floating with assistance, putting face in water, blowing bubbles and more.

Terrific Tots (without parent)
Children will be taught not to fear water, but to respect and enjoy it. Class environment includes basic skills: blowing bubbles, arm strokes, bicycle kick, getting hair wet, supported front and back float, swimming alone with a floatation bubble and more. It is common for children to repeat this level until ready for Wave I.

Wave I
There are three levels in Wave I: Level I-Water Exploration, Level II -Primary Skills, Level III-Stroke Readiness. A variety of skills will be taught. All children will be tested and grouped with others of comparable skills on the first day of class. It is not uncommon for children to spend more than one term in Wave I in order to complete the skill levels. Please consider this when registering for multiple lessons. Choose a time and a session that are appropriate for you and your child.

Level I - Water Exploration
Focuses on supported front and back floating, beginning arm movements, an introduction of safety skills, supported kicking on front and back, fully submerging face and more.

Level II - Primary Skills
This level introduces unsupported floating with kicks, rhythmic breathing, front crawl, back crawl orientation, holding breath underwater and more.

Level III - Stroke Readiness
This level includes improving skill competency, deep-water work, including elementary backstroke, treading water, front and back crawl, front and back glide and more.

Wave II
Children must have completed Wave I or its equivalent before moving into Wave II. There are three levels in Wave II: Level IV Stroke Development, Level V -Stroke Refinement and Level VI Stroke Proficiency. A variety of skills will be taught. All children will be tested and grouped with others of comparable skills on the first day of class. It is not uncommon for children to spend more than one term in Wave II in order to complete the skill levels. Please consider this when registering for multiple lessons. Choose a time and a session that are appropriate for you and your child.

Level IV-Stroke Development
This level provides a solid reinforcement of the foundational strokes including the breaststroke, sidestroke and more.

Level V-Stroke Refinement
This level includes a review of backstroke, breaststroke, and sidestroke. Butterfly and surface dives are introduced.

Level VI-Stroke Proficiency
This level includes flip turns and endurance training as the main objectives.

 

Introduction to Competitive Swimming
If you love to swim and enjoy racing, this program is for you. Geared to the novice level the program teaches the four competitive strokes, turns and starts. There will be a time trials meet (beginner swim meet) on the last day of each session. The swimmers will learn sportsmanship, mental preparedness and self-confidence. This class is for swimmers who have completed Wave II (Or most of it.)

Junior Swim Teacher’s Program
This class is for swim students that have passed through most of our Wave 2 swim lesson program and are interested in learning how to become an instructor. The first three classes are dedicated to learning the basics of teaching. The final four classes include hands on experience where you will be paired with a swim teacher and serve as an assistant for our swim lessons.

Wave I & II Passing Requirements
In order to pass into each level, students must be able to complete the following requirements:

Wave I: Head fully submerged under water or go back to Terrific Tots

Level 1: Front Float with face in the water

Level 2: Raw Freestyle (basic arm circles and kicks) less than 10 ft

Level 3: Freestyle w/ alternating breathing and flutter kicks

Wave II Lessons: Insufficient freestyle should be sent back down to Wave I level 3.

Level 4: 10 yds Freestyle with alternating breathing, flutter kicks

Level 5: 10 yds Backstroke

Level 6: 10 yds Breaststroke with correct kick

-Children who pass out of level 6 are encouraged to join Intro to Competitive Swimming or Jr. Swim Teacher's Program

Private Swim Lessons
Get a more personalized approach with our private swim lessons. These one-on-one lessons are tailored to meet your personal needs. Lessons are 30 minutes in length for a series of six lessons.

Cancellations and Class Transfers
Cancellations will not be honored for classes missed or forgotten.

A cancellation will only be considered when: A cancellation form is submitted in writing to the office seven or more working weekdays prior to the beginning of the session. A $6 administration fee is charged per participant per program. Forms are available at the recreation office within BCC. You may submit a written request with the following information:

  • Participant’s name, address and phone number
  • Class level, session dates and class time
  • Name, address, and phone number of person requesting the transfer or refund
  • Reason for cancellation

All requests will be date-stamped and processed as received.
